Outreach & Education

On the evening of September 11, 2008, staff members of La Clinica de Tolosa (CDT) participated in an oral health education session for a small portion of the San Miguel Community.  The language spoken by this unique segment of the community is called “Mystico” which is very different from Spanish.  Therefore, CDT bi-lingual staff members spoke Spanish which was then translated by representatives within the “Mystico” community.

CDT became aware of this San Miguel community from a Public Health Nurse named Belen who came to CDT for help when she realized these families had no knowledge of oral health care.  As a result, CDT staff distributed 27 toothbrush bags to the children and illustrated proper oral hygiene practices to the parents.

Overall, the CDT staff felt this wonderful opportunity to reach out to the community was successful.  Though, prior to this evening, a few of the children from these families had been seen at CDT, efforts are continuing to encourage more of the families to bring their children in for dental care.
